Foundation Inc.

...is a non-Profit organization founded January 4th of 1994 and based on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Manderson, South Dakota. Our corporation is exclusively organized and operated for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes within the Manderson and Wounded Knee area. We focus special attention and assistance for the educational, charitable and fraternal needs of the students and families at Wounded Knee District School and the district of Wounded Knee, South Dakota.

Decisions are made by our school board members whom are local tribal members. Our business plan is as follows:

  • To build a data base of donors and grants to include: annual report, website, audit, on-line donation portal, (CC article 4b)
  • WKDS Foundation will utilize donations and grants to assist & supplement the needs of our students, families & WKD school and communities.

    Our School

    Wounded Knee District School was founded by "..." in 1969,
    A story that has been told about the White Horse Creek area is as follows:
    White Horse Creek – Boy was riding a white horse in his dream spearing fish in the creek, told his parents, had him reenact his dream according to protocol as told by Zach Bear Shield
    The burial site of the Lakota warrior Tasunke Witko (Crazy Horse) is said to be within our district. Elders can recall battles and other events that took place in our area, such as:

  • Black Elk had a dream, shared his story with the community.
  • 1890 massacre of Wounded Knee
  • Leaders: Red Dog, Kicking Bear, Standing Bear, Flying Hawk.
  • Wakan Community- In Rockyford area (Black Fox and Flying Hawk, Red Fish, and others that lived in that area.)
  • Pemmican – 1930’s one of the last survivors of the Greasy Grass Battle

    Sacred Sites

    We reinforce our cultural teachings to our students by not only providing classes throughtout the school year, but we also plan trips to sacred sites. Black Elk Peak, Bear Butte, Devils Tower, Story of the Woman that Lived with Wolves for the Winter Museums, Red Cloud Chamber of Commerce, Interior Visitors center, Badlands, St. Francis mission museum, Wall (SD) Wounded Knee Massacre museum
